Thankful Thursday – Sharon Spare

On this Thankful Thursday I am thankful for the gifts that Sharon Spare brings to my life. Sharon was the force behind the Beaufort, South Carolina Speech and Hearing Center. She put a lot of fun and zest into the SC Speech Language and Hearing Association Conventions. She is a Gold Medal Arthur Murray dancer and instructor.  She and the late Dr. Art Weiss could put on a demonstration that would make Dancing with the Stars look like amateur hour. Sharon worked tirelessly in the military schools around Beaufort as a speech/language pathologist and was a mentor to so many of the students in training at South Carolina State. She had a great friendship with the late Dr. Harold Powell. She and her close friend Aileen Lau Dickenson attended the national conventions of ASHA together. We shared many delightful meals together along with Dr. Powell and the late John Carney.  She received the Honors of the SC Speech and Hearing Association in recognition of her pioneering work. She is an idea person who shares. This is her first year not to be working full time. I have mentioned before what remarkable friendships developed among the executive directors of the community speech and hearing centers in South Carolina and those friendships are enduring. On this Thankful Thursday I am grateful for the gifts that Sharon Spare brings to my life.

Thankful Thursday is a day set aside to recognize the importance of someone to our lives and to let that person know of our gratitude. Develop an attitude of gratitude. Say Something Nice; Be a Lifter. You will be glad that you did.

Thankful Thursday – Colin Carnell

Colin CarnellOn this Thankful Thursday I am thankful for my grandson, Colin Carnell. It is his 15th birthday. Colin is an intelligent, enthusiastic, out-going, positive, handsome young man who makes you happy to be around him. He likes soccer, his Navy ROTC Unit at West Ashley High School and Girls, but probably in a different order. When I announced that I wanted to change the world by having everyone change his or her language on June first, Say Something Nice Day, he spontaneously volunteered, “I’ll help you, granddaddy.” Just imagine what would happen if we could get all young people texting something nice. Because of his reaction and support, I am launching the campaign to Change the World by Changing Our Language Campaign on his birthday. Colin is dedicated to his cell phone and all kinds of electronic games and Legos. Of course, his sister, Christina, stays on his case all the time. He swims like a fish and loves going out to Edisto with his Baldwin grandparents. On this Thankful Thursday and on every day, I am very thankful for, Colin.

Thankful Thursday – Kenneth “Buck” King

On this Thankful Thursday, I am thankful for Buck and Joyce King. Buck and his delightful and patient wife Joyce are two friends from back in Woodruff High School days. Buck is one of those people that you just feel good about being around. He has a great sense of humor and a way of making everyone laugh and feel comfortable. He was one of those popular football players in high school and at Furman. He and I were together in Sam Brissie’s infamous speech class and we worked together on the student newspaper. He went to Furman on a football scholarship. In 1954 he went into the military for two years. He and Joyce just celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on December 23rd.  Joyce deserves all of our admiration. Buck went back to Furman with two small children demanding a lot of attention. He had a distinguished career at Cryovac. He now lives a life of leisure in a golf club community near Woodruff. Buck is a really good researcher on the computer and turns up all kinds of stuff from the past. On this Thankful Thursday I am very happy that Buck King and Joyce are a part of my life.
