Thankful Thursday – Allison Wallace

On this Thankful Thursday I am grateful for my grand niece, Allison Wallace. Allison is a graduate of Appalachian State University in history and secondary education. She has been teaching in Lincolnton County Schools, but has just landed a teaching position in the Challenger Early College High School in Hickory, North Carolina. Challenger is a prestigious academic school. Those students are extremely fortunate. Allison is a real go getter. She has worked at Fatz Restaurant and is an assistant manager at a new restaurant. As if that were not enough, she has enrolled in a graduate program at Gardner Webb University. Whoever said that the current crop of young adults are lazy sure missed the boat with Allison. Allison is the daughter of my nephew, Dwayne. She is a terrific cook and looks after everyone around her. On this Thankful Thursday, I am very thankful for the contributions of Allison Wallace to my life.

Thankful Thursday – Mars Hill College

On this Thankful Thursday, I am grateful for the many contributions of Mars Hill College to my life. I had never heard of Mars Hill College; however, my high school speech teacher and school district superintendant, Sam Brissie, thought it would be a great place for me. He called Dr. Hoyt Blackwell, the President), and sang my praises. When we drove up for a visit my parents were sold on the school. Thanks to Mr. Brissie I received some scholarship assistance.

Mr. Brissie was right. It was a wonderful place. I made lifelong friends and acquired a wonderful foundation. I gained the confidence I needed to continue to follow my ambitions. I will be forever grateful for the things I gained there. Our debate team excelled so much so that Furman University gave me a student assistantship to help with their program while Mr. Held pursued his Ph.D. degree at Northwestern University.

On this Thankful Thursday, I am grateful to the administration faculty and fellow students that became such a part of my life at Mars Hill College. Mars Hill College will become Mars Hill University on August 15, 2013.

Thankful Thursday – Dwayne Wallace

On this Thankful Thursday, I am grateful for the gifts that my nephew, Dwayne Wallace, brings to my life. Dwayne (known as Nasy) and my son, Michael, were terrors at St. Andrews Elementary School until their teacher discovered that they were cousins and separated them.  Dwayne graduated from Lincolnton, NC High School and then joined the Air Force. He was stationed in Charleston at first. My father was so proud of him. He returned to Lincolnton to be lead supervisor at Clariant Corporation. He is the father of three wonderful daughters. Allison, Kelsey, and Megan, who give him as much hassle as any father could tolerate, but he is up to the task. He recently married Donna and added her son Nick to his life. Dwayne is an outstanding father and is idolized by his daughters. They have been his top priority and his devotion shows. Daughter Allison graduated from Appalachian State University and is perusing a teaching career in history. Kelsey is a student there and Megan is at Lenoir Rhyan. On this Thankful Thursday I am grateful for the gifts that Dwayne Wallace brings to my life.

Thankful Thursday – Wesley Gwinn

On this Thankful Thursday, I am grateful for the gifts that Wesley Gwinn brings to my life. Wesley is the son of my late nephew, Danny, and Denise. Wesley is the kind of son who would make any parent proud. He is an excellent student, well spoken, respectful, interested and interesting. He is a junior at Appalachian State University, but currently is an intern at the Heritage Foundation in Washington.  Although a very conservative foundation, the experience will give him an opportunity to rub shoulders with students from all over the country. He will also get to hear and meet a lot of the movers and shakers in Washington. He is very interested in politics and this summer will do an internship with Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina. He has already been featured in some safety commercials on television targeting teenage drivers. Wesley has a broad range of interests and is a good conversationalist. On this Thankful Thursday, I am very thankful for my great nephew, Wesley Gwinn.
