Thankful Thursday – Roger Carl

On this Thankful Thursday I am grateful for the presence of Roger Carl in my life. He is the taller half of the Paula/Roger group. Roger hails from New Mexico originally. He is in Charleston after living in Texas, Missouri, and Tennessee. He is very talented and versatile. He sings in the choir at First Baptist Church and plays in the hand bell choir. Roger is an amazing photographer. He has taken pictures all over Europe and China. He is a computer wizard who recently has utilized his skills helping schools and orphanages in China. Roger teaches an adult Sunday school at First Baptist Church – the not-so-fast class. I am in his class and we study the Bible verse by verse. Most of us will not complete the study materials at our present pace until we are well on the other side of the curtain. Roger and Paula travel extensively visiting cathedrals, attending organ concerts, and taking pictures of historic gardens. We usually have lunch with a group on Sundays after church. This remarkable couple brings a high standard of excellence, class and ethical standards to whatever project they tackle. It would be hard to over- estimate their contributions.  On this Thankful Thursday, I am grateful that Roger Carl is part of my life.

Thankful Thursday – The Rev. Gene Plyler

On this Thankful Thursday, I am thankful for the gifts that Gene Plyler brings to my life. Gene grew up near Rock Hill, South Carolina and graduated from Rock Hill High School. He graduated from Piedmont Bible College and has a distinguished career in church work, real estate and now nursing. Gene was ordained by Edgemoor Baptist Church where he attended Vacation Bible School as a boy. Gene is an excellent Sunday school teacher. He sings in the choir at First Baptist. Gene is a natural for nursing because he has shown such skill and compassion in helping several older members of the congregation. He recently completed a special program of study at Trident Technical College that prepared him for working with older patients in their homes and nursing facilities. Gene can repair or upgrade almost anything. He comes from a large family and every Christmas he writes a Christmas letter that he reads to many of us. He really was a tremendous help to our friend Jimmy in the last year or so of his life. Everyone needs a Gene Plyler in her or his life. Today I am thankful for the gifts that Gene Plyler brings to my life.

Thankful Thursday – Rabbi Anthony D. Holz, DD

On this Thankful Thursday, I am thankful for the blessings that Rabbi Tony Holz has brought to my life. He is now the retired Rabbi Emeritus of Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim. I first met Rabbi Holz when I took my graduate classes studying the not-for-profit sector of our economy on tours there. Synogogs, churches, and religious institutions are a large part of that sector. Rabi Holz graciously spoke to those groups. I admired his ability to field a question that offered him an opportunity to take a swipe at other religious groups and turn it into a teaching opportunity.  He handled every situation with kindness and tact.  He also displayed a great sense of humor. As is often the case I usually learned more than my students. Of course, the synagogue itself is such a beautiful treasure for the city. I encourage all the tourists who come to First Baptist Church to tour there as well. Rabbi Holz grew up and was educated n Cape Town, South Africa. He was ordained in 1970 and came to Charleston in 1992. He was awarded the Doctor of Divinity degree in 1995. He has helped me grow in my understanding and appreciation of other religious traditions and I am very grateful. The more I learn and understand other traditions, the more I am able to understand my own. On this Thankful Thursday, I am very grateful for the gifts that Rabbi Anthony Holz brings to my life.
