Fifty-Two Keys for Living, Loving and Working

Stay centered

Remember who you are. Stay true to your values. Don’t sacrifice your core to the passing temptations or persuasions of the moment. Character is built and strengthened decision by decision and moment by moment. Who you are takes a lifetime to build and only a few seconds to destroy. Finishing well is far more important than starting well. Life is a marathon not a sprint. When you know who you are, you are prepared for those split second decisions that can make or break your life. Never give over control of your life to someone else. Never abandon who you are for the expediency of the moment.

Fifty-Two Keys for Living, Loving and Working

Be polite

Always say “please” and “thank you.” Rudeness is never appropriate. When you are tempted to be rude, think of your mother. Would she approve of what you are about to say or do? Even in those situations where others make it difficult to remain pleasant remember who you are. Do not give over control of your life to someone else. Remember that you are in charge of you. Someone is always watching and/or listening.

Reduce Stress – Key 48

Stress is a robber of health, vitality, and mental agility. It steals our imagination and our creativity. It dampens our inspiration and destroys relationships. Prioritize what is important and eliminate the trivia. Although you will never totally eradicate stress you can control it rather than allowing it to control you. Take a walk, a nap, meditate, hum a tune or just change your focus. Sara Lowrey, my speech professor at Furman University, was right. When she said, “What a dull world bleak and bare, if there were no time to sit and stare.” Stress is a major factor in the workplace and should be taken very seriously. It can lead to violence if not managed promptly and correctly. You must take care of yourself before you can take care of others.
