It’s Not a Good Trade

When I was a young boy, we traveled more than a 100 miles in an un-air-conditioned car in the South Carolina summer heat to visit my widowed grandmother. Instead of the expected words of welcome she said, “Be quiet. ‘The Guiding Light,’ is on.” She traded time with her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren for an imaginary family.

My daughter from out-of-state is here this week to celebrate her birthday. We will celebrate at dinner with her brother, sister-in-law, niece and nephew. We postponed the celebration a day so that her nephew could be present. I am grateful for this opportunity to be together. Who is missing? Her mother, who is with her ancestors, but very much in our hearts.

The moral of this story. Don’t squander the time you have with family and friends by being on your cell phone or scrolling through Facebook. The incident with my grandmother occurred decades ago. I remember it as though it happened this morning. We may think that we have all the time in the world. We don’t. We have this moment. It will not come again.

I am not being morbid. I am offering a simple statement of fact. Do not swap what you have for an episode of, ‘The Guiding Light.’

Fifty-Two Keys for Living, Loving and Working

Linger

Relish the conversation, the cup of coffee, the flower garden, the view. Smell the roses. Let the dirt trickle through your fingers. Enjoy the breeze. Lie on the cool grass. Gaze at the stars. Hold hands a little longer. Taste the moment. Don’t sacrifice this special moment to what will be or what might have been. Sit quietly and just listen. Time rushes by so quickly that in our haste we will miss the part of life that is so important. We need to replenish our souls. What a wonderful, beautiful world we live in! Don’t miss it. When this moment is gone, it is gone forever. Let the laughter bathe your soul. Feel the spirit, the energy, the love, the compassion that is all around you. This moment is what we have. Don’t spoil it. Don’t wish it away.

Fifty-two Keys for Living, Loving and Working

Be present

Be present is by far the most important key. Be in the moment with your whole being not thinking of what will come next or what has happened in the past. Be in this moment fully committed to it. We need to glean from each moment what it has to reveal to us. This is the now. What is happening this very instant? We cannot detain the moment, or recall it, but we can easily miss it.

When we are at work, we spend much of our time thinking about what we would like to be doing at home. Sometimes we are planning our vacation, thinking about our daughter’s impending wedding, thinking about our grandchildren or perhaps retirement. Our mind has temporarily taken flight. We are not present with the current project or with the other people in the room. We miss what is taking place in the moment.

When we are at home, we think about what awaits at work again missing the now. We miss the smiles, sparkling eyes, sighs, stiffened body language and the lilt in the voice. We are focused on another place and time.

Liza Minnelli, the fabulous Oscar, Emmy, Tony, and Grammy winner, has it right when she says, “If you’ve got one foot in yesterday and one foot in tomorrow, you’re missing today.”[1]

Be in the now. That is why we call it the present.
