Communication as Blessing

Good conversation like good music or a good book nourishes the soul. Good communication builds relationships. Nothing says more about a person’s caring than his or her willingness to listen without judgment or interruption. Sometimes our greatest ministry is simply to be one hundred percent present and to listen without judgment or interruption.

There are times when there are no words capable of conveying what is in our hearts, but there are no times when being one hundred percent present with another is not effective. Raymond DeSchazo, former professor at Mars Hill University, was fond of saying, “The way you know when you really love another person is when you can be in a room together for hours and neither of you says a word.” Just being present is enough.

We all need and search for connectedness. We know how it feels to be in a crowd and yet feel utterly alone and isolated. We need and want to belong. We need to touch and be touched. We can be warmed by another person’s smile or simple acknowledgement.

The ability to communicate is a gift. We can bless others by the way we use our gift to heal, to build-up and not to harm.

Thankful Thursday – Pat and Bud (Ernest) Brown

On this Thankful Thursday I am grateful for the presence of Pat and Bud Brown in my life. Pat and Bud are the co-hosts of Baptist House at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York State. They have made the beautiful old denominational house a place of thoughtful conversation, relaxation and mental and spiritual stimulation. They have welcomed and encouraged me in the promotion of Christian Civility. Bud is a Baylor graduate. He received a Master’s degree from Simmons College and the Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is a pianist, organist, and music director. Pat had a great teaching career and is a wonderful hostess. On this Thankful Thursday, I am grateful for the gifts that Pat and Bud Brown bring to my life.

Thankful Thursday is a day set aside to recognize the importance of someone to our lives and to let her or him know of our gratitude. Develop an attitude of gratitude. Say Something Nice; Be a Lifter. You will be glad that you did.

Thankful Thursday – Paula Carl

On this Thankful Thursday I am thankful for the gifts that Paula Carl brings to my life. Paula and Roger comprise a great couple, but Roger will be back next week. Paula grew up in Missouri. She graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. She comes from a family of ministers. Somewhere in her pilgrimage she met and married Roger. They eventually migrated to Nashville where she formed great friendships in the church music groups. She is an accomplished musician. She composes and arranges music. She is an organist, a singer and a conductor. She is an in demand organist playing at numerous churches throughout the lowcountry. She directs the senior choir at First Baptist Church and James Island Baptist Church. These choirs have performed at the Hamrick Lectureship and they routinely visit nursing centers where they are always greeted with great enthusiasm. Paula and Roger are great travelers and have visited tons of gardens, cathedrals, organ concerts and castles all over Europe. They are devoted members of the National Trust and have an appreciation for all things historic. Paula is an extraordinary hostess and relishes all things blue. Both bring a love for the history, traditions and worshipfulness of First Baptist Church of Charleston. On this Thankful Thursday, I am grateful for the many gifts Paula Carl brings to my life.

Thankful Thursday – Suzie Redd

On this Thankful Thursday, I am blessed by the gifts that Suzie Redd brings to my life. Suzie is a native of Picayune, Mississippi and a graduate of Mississippi State College for Women; however, she is an ardent LSU fan. She moved to Charleston with her late husband David from Orangeburg, SC. She and David met in New Orleans where she was in nursing school at the Baptist Hospital and he was studying at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Suzie sings in the choir at First Baptist Church of Charleston where David was organist and Minister of Worship for more than 30 years. David and the late Dr. John Hamrick taught me how to worship. Suzie has so many talents that it is difficult to know where to start. She was a great nurse for years for her mother and David’s mother. She keeps all the music organized for the choir. She is an outstanding hostess and a wonderful cook. Of course, she loves Louisiana Cajun food. She brightens any occasion by just being there. On this Thankful Thursday, I am grateful that Suzie Redd is part of my life. Anne Cheek pictured along with Suzie has also been featured on this Thankful Thursday blog.
